Spot the Tui
One thing we love about home education
One of the things I really love about home ed is the ability to tailor lessons and topics into excercises that are both relevant and enjoyable! The kids learn so much more when they are 'into' it and Kelly Tarltons is providing heaps of 'fodder' for lessons!
Today we did stories about sharks- here is the great story Jacob wrote!
If I was a shark I would eat fish. I would swim around looking for food and I would like to eat crayfish, whales, jellyfish, birds, penguins and snapper. Sometimes I might eat dolphins too!
Pearl wrote...
If I was a shark I would change colours so no one could see me. I would hide by rocks and try to catch fish as they swim past. I would carefully sneak up and go SNAP! I would also creep up to jelly fish and go SNAP! I would like to be a shark and I would live in the ocean forever!
For extension I drew some sharks and they had to come up with there own "Sh" words to write inside. Pearl had to choose one word and practice writing it (she chose shiney) and Jacob had to pick 'sh' 2 words to put in a sentence.
This is what he said: 'I went to get some polish so I could make my motorbike shine." Talk about being able to acheive when they are interested! That's a great sentence for Jake who usually say's as little as possible!
We utilised KT's for Tui's maths too and I designed a lesson to help her revise the 4 and 5 x tables based around Kelly Tarltons.
For example: There are 5 people going to KT's.
How much would it be to get in if it cost $6 ea? (5x6=) $8 ea? (5x8=)
If it cost $25 for 5 people that would mean it cost how much per person to get in ( 5x?= 25)
Tui also worked out how much parking would cost at $4 per hour if we parked for 3 hrs, 6 hrs, 8hrs etc and she also had to work out how many fish would be needed to feed sharks and stingrays (for example: 4 stingrays eat 7 fish each. 4x7= ? fish.) A great, practical and fun way of learning multiplication!
They are learning spelling, language skills, maths and more and having a great time doing it!

Still can't load photo's!
Hi All, no pics again! I still can't load photo's and I even tried setting up another blog but had the same trouble there! I don't know what's going on but it's very annoying! Never mind! For some reason I can post clipart though...
We've had a good week albeit short with labour weekend and a half day on Tuesday. We're hoping to go to Kelly Tarltons at the end of the term so we spent time today cruising around the Kelly Tarltons website and reading about sharks. We are going to study the types of sharks they have there, where they usually live, what they eat, what they are like etc and we will study seahorses and octopus's later on. Jacob was really interested in how they caught them and how they made the tanks so we will look into that a bit more too.
It will be a huge buzz to go and a great way to end the school year- We can't wait!

If I was a dinosaur- By Jacob
If I was a dinosaur I would eat heaps of leaves and I would eat dinsoaurs smaller than me!
I would whip them with my big, long tail.
Jacob's describing words for a dinosaur....
Smelly, lumpy, gigantic, huge, mean, tall, big long tail, fast runners, hard skin, heavy.

If I was a butterfly....By Pearl
If I was a butterfly.
If I was a butterfly I would eat lots of nectar.
I would paint pictures of butterflies flying around and I would love to fly around on nice sunny days.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TUI!!!!!
9 YEARS OLD TODAY!
On Thursday I gave the kids a whole lot of clues about what we were going to make in the afternoon....as you can see they were kind enough to taste test them before everyone got here (just to make sure they were ok *wink*.)
No clues for the cake though....that was a surprise & Tui was one happy girl when she saw that! ( Doh!! photo won't load...watch this space!)

First day of term 4
Well the kids were excited to be back 'at school' so I guess we must be doing something right! We did a lot of revision (using flash cards and verbal questions)to see how much they remembered
after 2 weeks off and they all did pretty well. Wheeew! Here we are playing monopoly, Pearl counted out all the money for us. Unfortunately although the game got off to a good start it ended up in world war three erupting so we didn't finnish it! Never mind. We ended up making some cool cards for a cousins up coming birthday...speaking of birthdays ONLY 3 SLEEPS TO GO!!! Tui is seriously excited and can't wait!
